The flagship program since 1979 has been our awesome week of Camp Opportunity!
During camp week, our campers experience a safe and peaceful environment in the scenic outdoors, learn how to trust and relate to peers and adults, and increase their positive development in areas related to their self-esteem, confidence, and identity. Our camp week includes hiking, swimming, ropes courses, canoeing, zip-lining, rock-climbing & wall-climbing, etc. Attending camp meets the health and wellness needs of a vulnerable population that is more likely to experience health and other adversities in their lives per the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Many of our campers are reunited with siblings (when appropriate and approved) from whom they have been separated due to foster care, adoption, or other intervention services resulting from their experiences of abuse and neglect. Our goal for 2015 is to bring 110 children to Camp Opportunity Week at Camp Tekoa.
Other recreational activities include:
- Quarterly trips for 6-11 year-olds to The Mountain Goat climbing gym to promote health, trust, and reliability
- Annual summer rafting trip for 12-14 year-olds with GOAT to offer adventure to teach teamwork, confidence, and a thirst to explore the outside world
- Saturday bike rides (summer, fall, spring) with Momentum Bike Clubs for up to ten to twelve 11-14 year-olds to provide positive adult relationships through mentors, and offer greater health through communal bike rides
